From The View Of The Onlooker- PSP Vs DS Review

Greetings of the friendly nature my robotic-like fans, this is the eleventh entry of From The View Of The Onlooker. And while normally I would reply to comments, that however isn’t an option. Why, well none of you have left me a comment

…I’m very disappointed in you all. Tut tut. And Im hungry! Is this how you treat your ferbies, cos’ if so, Iam appalled

Ahh well, at least its less work for me. Anyway, this entry is the first of a series of ‘vs topics’, where Ill compare two or more things that have a rivalry bigger than Big Brother’s c**piness. With that said, lets venture into the convoluted world of gaming, and compare two fierce attention grabbing consoles; the Nintendo DS, and the Sony PSP, and see which one is more worth your money.

LET THE REVIEW BEGIN >: (

Now what’s the first thing that makes handheld consoles what they are, well being able to play games, and be handheld and portable. And with that said (…do I even have to say FTW), lets check out portability.

Portability

Now while one may think this doesn’t take much brain power by just comparing the size of each, that isn’t necessarily the case. Though in terms of size…

…the PSP is just bigger, barely. And even more unfortunately for it, it’s covered by slots all around its side, in which compared to the DS, is more noticeable. And while it doesn’t have many, the emphasis is how noticeable it is, because it just looks ugly. Mind you, if it were compared to a white DS, that would be a completely different story, so I cant prosecute it for that. Though on the plus side, it does look cool with its face and black and silver covering.

It just looks so flashy and modern, and the surface on the back is a perfect matt/reflective hybrid, that feels and looks good. However, the DS equally looks good.

DUAL SCREENS (hintDShint). Not only do they look awesome, but also they provide even more eye-candy that is gaming. But aside from that, the only things I don’t like are

-that the screens are a bit too small

-and the reflective back can get slightly greasy

The screen size’s isn’t really a big problem, but when compared to the PSP, the difference becomes all too noticeable.

Though the same can’t be said for the back. At first, the reflective sheen is a nice touch to the console, but after a while, it collects fingerprints, wipes, and all sorts, which is kinda annoying. Plus Nintendo knew they screwed up with it, because when the DSi was released, its back was changed to matt black, but that didn’t do a lot of good, because then it scratched easy, so why cant Nintendo just replicate Sony’s back design. Seriously, it looks f**king stupid on Nintendo’s part.

But when it comes down to it, I do seem to side with the DS, simply because of its smaller design and two screens. It just looks better then the PSP, so sorry Sony (and all you Pepsi drinking Sony fans), but the DS comes out better in Portability.

DS: 1 PSP: 0

But as we all obviously know, portability isn’t just the only factor to a great handheld console, gameplay is just as important, if not more, so lets compare gameplay

Gameplay

Okay, so even though I cant truly compare which has the better gameplay without buying every other game for each, I will use what I consider to be one of the best games of each as a general basis.

Lets start with Mario first, why…well the Mario series is just legendary. It must come first, or else we all die :I…and I didn’t come up with that rule, BTW.

The Mario series is a prime leader in Nintendo’s general genre of games: fun. Today, each major gaming company has been stereotyped by genres of game that they employ, which I think is a little unfair. Though the DS (and Wii) both have generally ‘fun’ games, there are offbeat games that make up a large majority of each, and I think a lot more people need to know that. But, for the sake of this review, stereotyping is needed, so yeah…wait what the F**k was I talking about again.

Damn Goomba, I hope you fall off a cliff and into the pits of hell >:(

Well, like I said before, New Super Mario Bros DS is like every other main Mario series game before it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does beg for more features. The gameplay is fluid and addicting, exactly how I like it, so overall, not much has been mentioned that has already been said, and it doesn’t need saying. It’s Mario, plain and simple. Lets see Medal Of Honor.

The game is like any other 1st person shooter, but with this one, I’ve found it has a unique charm to it, being that you don’t really think that it takes place in WW2, because it doesn’t seem like story or time is being pushed in your face. Its just mindless slaughter, and by god do gamers love it.

Just aiming at somebody, man that’s fun. I hope they have a family >:}

Damn you Stefan. I hope you get dragged to Hell along with that ***hole Goomba

Well, as you’ve probably seen, it looks like they’ve got gameplay mastered, but as I’ve previously said, there’s about a million other 1st person shooter games that Sony uses, and though this game means something to me, I doubt it stands out in the gaming world.

But overall with game play, it’s a little tricky seeing as both these games exist in completely different genres, but when it comes down to the value of which one your more likely to play more often, I’d have to say Mario takes it all. No offence to Medal of Honor, but Nintendo has tried and tested games longer then anybody on the market currently, and know those certain features to put into games, that make people coming back for more. May be a little biased, but DS is triumphant again.

DS: 2 PSP: 0

But with portability and gameplay, graphics is also a key essential in making memorable games, so lets check out graphics

Graphics

As you could tell from Mod and Mario, it looks like Mod is completely immersed in 3D (like how Seth Macfarlane is immersed, or bathed, in money…damn copycat), while Mario is more in the range of 2.5D, and though that suits both games perfectly, it must be mentioned that Sony is great at processing graphics in games, while Nintendo seems a little ‘safe’, and usually sticks to what it does best, 2D/2.5D (Though only in the case of the DS). Honestly, it seems like quite a shame really, because even if it isn’t obvious to most people, the DS must be able to go farther in terms in graphics, and if it experimented in making a 1st person shooter game like Mod, or some other kind strictly 3d game, then that would be good progress.

Aside from the usual games, lets check out the start-up menu for each. PSP first

As one can tell from it, it doesn’t exactly showcase the PSP’s full potential in graphics, in fact it is rather simple looking. But thankfully, the entire set of options is easily accessible, and though it hardly counts for much, the blue background is somewhat calming and pleasant. Eh, not bad, but not really good either. How does the DS fare.

Well…very exciting. It’s not really amazing, nor does it look remotely good. Its more simple then the PSP, if anything. But, like the PSP again, it really doesn’t scream ‘best graphics possible’, and I feel im being a little too hard on both, because the start-up menu isn’t really meant to be analysed this much, its just for accessing functions.

But to which one has the overall best graphics, it is a little easier this time. I may be playing into a biased stereotype, but the PSP seems to have the edge on this one. Not just in its menu, but in most games as well. May be Nintendo’s fault not showcasing the DS’s graphics better, but the PSP is more willing to ‘go out there’. Point to the PSP

DS: 2 PSP: 1

But to play on a good console, controls are needed essentially (a console without controls is like Transformers without Megan Fox…we wouldn’t bother with it, that’s the direct answer). So…heeeres CONTROLS >:}

Controls

As you can plainly see, it’s the classic d-pad and 4-button configuration that has been used by Nintendo since the NES controller. Theres not much else people can say about it that is new, because while it is a little boring nowadays, it did set a new standard back in 1986 (European release date of NES), and even today, it has proved its simple success by being incorporated in almost every present day console controller. It’s made of pure win, that’s all I can say.

Just like the DS, the PSP uses the same configuration of buttons, however, there is one black little lump that catches your eye.

Just below the D pad, is…a joystick (or joylump, that’s more appropriate…wow, that actually sound like a word for breast 0.0). Holy hell has Sony f**ked up. Well, where do I begin?

For starters, its in awkward place, don’t you think? When your using the D pad, you can catch your thumb on the joylump, but when your using the joylump, you can catch your thumb on the D pad. For F**k sake, it can get real annoying, but that isn’t the worst of it. Most games don’t even bother using the D pad that much, like MoD for example. You use the joylump to move around, but you use the D pad to turn your gun. Can you honestly imagine how bad that is, but it just breaks logic. Or as another example, lets take Midnight Club 3: DUB edition. Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures for it, but basically, x is acceleration, and the joylump turns. The D pad is basically useless in that game.

My message is clear: EITHER HAVE ONE OR THE OTHER!

I mean, a joylump (Okay, joystick...) is a good idea, but it just doesn’t work with a D pad, so as you’ve pieced together now, the DS wins by far. If it were a joylump and 4 button configuration, then the PSP would easily win, but here, its all messed up

DS: 3 PSP: 1

Well we’ve compared Portability, Gameplay, Graphics and Controls. Theres not much beyond that, but finally we can see which one is more favourable…cos’…I don’t know

Favorability

Looking as a whole on each console, each one has its own unique features. While the DS focuses more on games (with DS download play and WiFi access), the PSP has adopted a more ‘Ieverything’ approach, and can go on the Internet, show photos, play music, and play videos. All of this makes the DS look bad, which is true, because even with the current model DSi, it still can’t do everything the PSP can. But interestingly enough, its taken a different way in the public, being that I’ve seen many people use DS download play and internet access in the past, but hardly anyone use the Internet or play movies off the PSP. Why, well I think in trying to become a Ieverything, the PSP has been shadowed by the Ipod and other more adapted technologies, letting the DS get ahead.

Also, Nintendo usually has more adverts promoting games or the DS/Wii, Sony barely has a few, and Microsoft…I haven’t even seen anything. Plus the fact that I’ve heard people say in the past ‘Im going getting a DS at the weekend’, and never anything about the PSP.

So…yeah. I think you may agree with me that the DS is more favoured in the public. Too bad about the PSP, but it doesn’t seem to be advertised as much.

DS: 4 PSP: 1

So with that, it looks the Nintendo DS wins!

Like I’ve said on every other entry (kinda like a bumper sticker…and im not American), post a comment on what you thought about this entry, and what your personal verdict is, because without your help, I wont become a good blogger…that and I’ll starve…don’t let me starve! *You heartless b**terds*
